The shape of hype

Something strange just happened on that last slide. A newspaper called this machine the first step toward a mind, while a leading researcher called its inventor a showman. Same device, same year, opposite verdicts.

How can two reactions be that far apart? The answer is they weren't really speaking to the same audience, or for the same reasons.

The newspaper wasn't reporting the doubters. It was reporting the Navy's excitement. The Navy funded Rosenblatt, Rosenblatt made the boldest claims, and a journalist printed them. Newspapers sell papers. "Machine may one day think" sells. "Promising early result, big questions remain" does not.

Minsky wasn't a reporter. He was a rival researcher on the other side of a real argument. He believed intelligence should come from hand-written rules, not from a machine learning on its own. Rosenblatt's approach threatened that. The two camps were chasing the same funding and the same prize: the credit for building the first thinking machine.

So the divide wasn't two experts puzzled by the same evidence. It was the people selling an idea, amplified by a press that loves a big story, set against a rival who had every reason to doubt it.

If that sounds familiar, it should. The same pattern keeps repeating. A real advance gets made, the people behind it make sweeping promises, the headlines carry those promises far and wide, and skeptics push back just as hard. The hype around AI didn't start in the 2020s. It was already here in 1958, pointed at a machine that turned dials on a wall.
