Remember the ELIZA conversation from the first chapter. You were watching for something: a slip, a response that didn’t quite ring true.

You were relying on a sense you can’t fully describe: a feel for what a human response sounds like versus a machine’s.

Here’s the strange part: machines became much better over time. You can have a long conversation with a chatbot and never catch the slip you were waiting for. And that feeling? It became less reliable.

Which brings us back to the question we’ve been circling: if a machine can produce responses indistinguishable from a human’s, is there still something missing? And if so, what is it?
