What failure teaches

In science, failure isn't the opposite of progress. It's often how progress happens.

The two AI winters were frustrating, expensive, and humbling. But they weren't wasted. Every failed approach was a test of a hypothesis about what intelligence is and how it works. The winters eliminated two large wrong answers.

That's valuable. It's how the field moved forward.
