And yet something bothered him.
He had built machines that worked. They followed instructions flawlessly, millions of steps per second, without error. But they did not seem to know what they were doing. They executed. They did not understand.
Was that distinction real? Or was it just human reluctance, an unwillingness to credit a machine with something we prefer to keep for ourselves?
That was the question he could not leave alone.
