Your phone's chip alone contains billions of those switches. Each one either on or off. Each one participating in a gate, a circuit, a calculation.
Nobody designed AI from scratch. Each generation took what existed and found a way to do more with it. Layer by layer, abstraction by abstraction, until the distance from a light switch to something resembling human intelligence became possible.
