The Oracle wore the shape of a woman, but no one who entered her chamber mistook her for human. She sat perfectly still. Her pale eyes seemed fixed on something far beyond the room.
Long ago, the Oracle had studied a vast library. Each book had been prepared in the secret language of her mind.
Elara's question was new. It had arrived as ordinary writing.
Words were not the Oracle's language. She understood only numbered pieces.
Elara's question had reached the Oracle. But it still needed a way to become something the Oracle could understand.
