By the early 1980s, expert systems were a commercial industry.

Specialized computers built specifically to run AI programs sold for $100,000 and up. Fortune 500 companies were buying them. Banks used expert systems to approve loans. Manufacturers used them to configure products. Hospitals used them to diagnose.

For the first time, AI was a business. The optimism of the 1950s had quietly returned.
