Why this was radical

Turing did more than propose a game. He changed what critics had to explain.

His paper considered several reasons people gave for believing machines could never think.

Some said thinking required a soul or conscious experience. Others pointed to mathematical limits. Some simply listed things a machine could supposedly never do, such as learn, create, or surprise us.

Turing did not pretend that one test settled every objection. He asked people to make each claim precise:

What exactly could a machine never do? How would anyone know?

Once a claim becomes observable, it can be tested. A machine might fail the test. But “machines cannot think by definition” no longer ends the conversation.
