Consciousness is a different question again

Understanding and consciousness are separate questions.

Consciousness is about whether there is an inner experience. Pain hurts. Red looks like something. There is a way it feels to be you, sitting there reading this.

We do not have an agreed explanation for how subjective experience arises in people. We can study what happens in the brain, but connecting that activity to an inner point of view remains an open problem.

A conversation is not enough to prove that a machine has an inner experience. It is not enough to prove the opposite either.
