Understanding is still open

Return to the opening. Perhaps the conversation felt as though someone was there.

That feeling is not proof of another mind.

The interface gives you familiar evidence: fluent replies, social cues, and a voice that says "I." Feeling a presence tells you how convincing the conversation was. It does not tell you what produced the words.

But "it only predicts words" does not settle the question either. It names part of the mechanism. It does not tell us which abilities that mechanism can or cannot produce, or what should count as understanding.

Philosophers and scientists disagree about what understanding requires. This course can explain the mechanism, but the mechanism does not supply an agreed definition of understanding.

For now, the evidence leaves the question open. A convincing conversation cannot answer it by itself.
