Module 11 Chapter 3

What Are We, Then?

A calculator beat every person alive at arithmetic and nobody had a crisis about it. A telescope saw further than any eye and left our sense of ourselves intact.

This is different, and the reason is worth stating precisely. The things held up as proof that people are a distinct kind of thing, language, argument, art, invention, are the exact things this machine does passable versions of. Not well, and not reliably. Well enough to unsettle people who use it.

The temptation is to treat that unease as a question about the machine. Is it thinking? Does it understand? Is it conscious?

But every one of those questions rebounds. To ask whether it understands, you have to say what understanding is, and it turns out nobody agrees. To ask whether it creates, you need an account of creativity that does not accidentally disqualify most of what people do, since human originality is also built from absorbed material. The questions aimed at the machine keep landing back on us.

Two of them can be taken seriously with all the machinery in hand. Does it understand, and can it create? Consciousness stays open on purpose, because nobody knows how it arises in people, which makes confident dismissal and confident attribution rest on the same missing knowledge.

Both answers have their strongest witnesses. A musician sent his own style back by a machine put the case against about as well as it has ever been put. On the other side sits a protein-folding problem that stood for decades and then fell, which leaves the question of whether such a system can ever reach past the data it was given.

The last question is not about the machine at all. It is for you.
