The one already running

Look back at the two lists you just read. Almost everything on them shares one feature.

Cheap persuasion, the rising cost of verification, surveillance, automated decisions about people, concentration, environmental cost, dual use, compounding errors. Each is a real mechanism with a plausible path to harm. And each one, as described, is mostly a risk about what could happen if the trend continues, if the systems spread further, if nothing intervenes.

That framing is useful for weighing them. It also makes them easy to file away as future problems, and one of them is not.

One is not a projection at all. It is the thing you looked at this morning.

The channel that most people get most of their information through is filling with material generated at almost no cost, ranked by systems that were never designed for a world where filling a channel is free. That is not a forecast. It is measurable now, it involves no capability that does not already exist, and it is running at a scale that makes the individual cases beside the point.

It also has a property none of the others have. It degrades the very thing you would use to check any of the rest.

The next chapter follows that mechanism properly: where the flood comes from, what carries it, what it costs to run, who was paid what to build the parts nobody talks about, and what happens to a system trained on the internet once the internet is full of its own output.

It is the least speculative material in this module, and the least comfortable.
