Order changes what happened

These two sentences contain the same three words.

Dog bites man.

Man bites dog.

Nothing was added or removed. Only the order changed.

But the two sentences describe different events. In the first, dog does the biting. In the second, man does.

A group of things where order matters is called a sequence.

So a machine reading language cannot treat a sentence as a loose pile of words. It has to keep track of which word came first, second, and third.
