The specialist knowledge inside the system was real. So was its boundary.

It could compare the warning signs with causes already described in its rulebook. It could not invent the missing possibility of an uneven base.

In plain words, the system could reason with what people had given it. It could not reach beyond that knowledge when the world produced something new.
