Intelligence has width

Intelligence is not a switch with only two positions. It can have different widths.

Deep Blue had enormous ability inside chess and almost none outside it.

A general-purpose language model such as GPT-3 was designed to work with language across many subjects and tasks. It could answer questions, continue different kinds of prose, and perform some tasks from instructions or examples in its prompt. Its tested range was much wider than Deep Blue's, although it still had important limits.

A person connects ideas across language, movement, relationships, goals, and consequences. But even people have uneven abilities. Someone can be brilliant at music and hopeless at finding their way through a new city.

Ask how far an ability reaches. What situations can the system handle? What happens when the situation changes?
