Deep Blue won at chess by searching possible moves and scoring the positions it found. Calling that calculation describes the mechanism. It does not settle what the achievement should count as.
The human brain is a physical system too. Brain cells exchange electrical and chemical signals. Mental life depends on that physical activity, but researchers still disagree about how physical processes relate to conscious experience.
This does not mean that a brain is simple, or that copying its activity would reproduce a mind.
It means that the phrase "only calculation" does not finish the argument. Human thought also depends on physical processes. The unanswered question is which kinds of process can produce understanding or experience.
