Four different questions

Four questions are often bundled into one:

Can it perform this task? That is a question about ability or intelligence.

Does experience change what it does? That is a question about learning.

Does it connect the symbols it uses to meaning? That is a question about understanding.

Is there an experience from the inside? That is a question about consciousness.

One answer does not settle the others. A system can improve at a task without proving that it understands the task or feels anything while doing it.

The next thought experiment focuses on understanding.
