Thinking belonged to humans. It required consciousness, a soul, personhood itself. Machines were tools: lifeless, soulless, incapable.
Turing turned to the skeptics: Prove it. Define thinking precisely. Show me exactly why machines can't do it.
No one could. And that was precisely his point.
