A peculiar habit of mind

Alan Turing was a mathematician, but his real gift was a peculiar discipline: he took impossible questions seriously.

Where others saw a question like “Can machines think?” and turned away, Turing stayed with it. Too vague, too philosophical, too elusive. Most people stopped there.

He did not. He held the question long enough for it to sharpen, until it began to have edges.
