Give the answer two bulbs

One bulb can show one binary digit. Two bulbs can show two digits.

Read them together:

00 both bulbs dark, zero

01 only the right bulb lit, one

10 only the left bulb lit, two

Addition has become two smaller jobs. Each bulb only needs its own yes-or-no rule.
