The work surface

Think of random access memory, or RAM, as a work desk.

The instructions and information being used right now are spread within quick reach of the processor. Open apps, active documents, and part of the video you are watching can all occupy space there.

RAM is quick to reach, but it needs power to keep its contents.

Turn the computer off and the work surface is cleared.

The desk is useful as a first picture. The real arrangement is more precise.
