Same result, different method

A calculator does arithmetic faster than you without thinking through the problem as you would. A plane crosses an ocean without flying like a bird. A telescope reveals distant objects without seeing them.

Doing the same task does not mean using the same method. Performance alone cannot tell us what process produced it.

Language makes the question harder. A telescope does not apologise, explain a joke, or respond to your mood. A language machine does, and those behaviours invite us to imagine a mind behind them.
