The same reply can lead to two very different reactions.
One reaction is that the machine only produces the appearance of meaning. It is like a film set that looks like a street from the front, even though there are no rooms behind the doors.
The other reaction turns the question around. Perhaps some parts of language, such as choosing the next word or matching a tone, require less understanding than people assumed.
Neither reaction explains how the machine works. They are interpretations of the same result.
There is no need to choose between them yet. First, we need a clearer picture of what the machine actually does.
